Repeal Bill 137: Saskatchewan Speaks Up for Trans Youth

People in Saskatchewan are welcoming and supportive of their neighbours, including trans youth. The more than 600 letters collected from across Saskatchewan send a clear message: residents do not support Bill 137. Instead, their letters call for inclusive schools, comprehensive sexual health education, and the protection of trans and gender-diverse youth.

In October 2023, the Government of Saskatchewan passed Bill 137, the Parents’ Bill of Rights. This law restricts how young people can express their identities at school and limits access to inclusive sexual health education.

In response, MLA Nathaniel Teed invited the community to speak out. His office received over 600 letters from across the province. MLA Teed’s office partnered with Dr. Rachel Loewen Walker and the Social Innovation Lab on Gender and Sexuality (University of Saskatchewan) to document the letters, and with Momentum to amplify these community voices across Canada. The letters form a powerful archive of collective resistance, solidarity, and support for Saskatchewan’s 2SLGBTQ+ community. They include personal reflections from trans youth, parents, educators, and allies – testimonies that reveal the lived realities of Bill 137 and underscore the urgent need for inclusive and affirming educational environments.

We read your letters. We heard your voices. This report brings them forward, loud and clear. It shares the experiences of those most impacted by Saskatchewan’s exclusionary policies and calls for urgent action to protect the dignity, safety, and self-determination of all youth in Saskatchewan and beyond.
